At the Family Center for Autism, enhancing social skills through recreational therapy programs is an essential element of what we do … and how we help. We offer programs specifically designed to improve social skills for children, tweens & teens and adults with autism who are looking to learn how to make friends and interact within a community setting.

Tiny Tots (3- to 5-years old)

Tot’s Sensory Gym Action Time!

Join us in our new state-of-the-art sensory gym to climb, jump, slide, bounce, and have a great time with your friends. This free flowing, yet structured, class will build the participants gross motor skills (crawling, jumping, balancing) while also strengthening their social skills (turn taking, waiting, helping). This will be an hour of movement, action, and smiles that is sure to be a hit with the participants!

 

CHILDREN (6- to 11-years old)

Minecraft

Minecraft is not really a game. It’s more like a toy. And it’s a virtual world where you can make just about anything. Work together to form castles, villages, cities, ships, spaceships, and even fantasy worlds. Socialization, sharing and creativity are all encouraged during this interactive class.

 

Builders Club                                                                    

The Builder’s Club is for children who have an interest in construction utilizing Lego™ bricks. The club enhances imagination, socialization, hand/eye coordination, fine motor skills, and problem solving skills. The Club is the place to get inspired, educated, and entertained with Lego-themed inspirational activities.

 

Lunch & Games

Bring a bagged lunch and come and unwind in between classes. Play some games or simply chat with friends in a fun atmosphere.

Cooperative Video Games

Take a break from the heat this summer and join us in our Rec Lounge to play some of the most popular video games today! While the participants are thinking they are here to have a good time behind the scenes we will be working on their interpersonal skills, their teamwork ability, being a good winner and a good loser, and a ton of other skills.  Why not build some skills while doing what they love to do?

 

Minecraft.edu

So you’ve mastered building things and creating new worlds.  You know the difference between red stone and glowstone and know how to use each one.  But did you know that Minecraft also can teach you about the world outside of the computer?  Our Minecraft.edu class will have 4-week theme that covers different “real world” topics through the use of this fun and comfortable program.  The themes for this summer are:

  1. Animals
  2. Music
  3. Science

Being able to sit and attend to a 45 minute lesson is a prerequisite to be involved.  To learn more about this exciting new program give us a call at (516) 355-9400!

 

Roblox Maker’s Club

Maybe Minecraft is no longer your thing.  Maybe instead you want to learn how to make worlds and games in Roblox and actually create something with the class?  If you do Roblox Maker’s club is the place to be!  Learn the ins and outs of this popular game while working on social skills and teamwork skills at the same time!

 

TWEENS/TEENS (12- to 17-years old)

This class is a fun and innovative way to enter the popular game of Minecraft. Complete tasks only possible in a 3D virtual world. Participants learn real-world concepts – building, farming, survival, logic, geography, geometry, creativity and teamwork—while working together on a local server to solve problems and socialize in a safe, online space.

Jewelry Making for Adults

This entry-level class is designed for all the future jewelry designers in the world!  Participants will learn common jewelry making techniques and create bracelets, necklaces, hair clips, and more!  In addition to working on fine motor and social skills, participants will also have the chance to work together and build their interpersonal while making friends!
